What Does a Podiatrist Do?
Have you ever found yourself wondering, “What does a podiatrist actually do?” Fortunately, it’s time to have all your questions answered — and your curiosity satisfied.
Podiatrists are trained allied health professionals. Podiatrists assess, diagnose, treat, and manage foot, ankle, leg, and even hip conditions.
How important is foot and leg health? Well, given an average life expectancy of 80 years, and depending on activity levels, a person can expect to walk between 120,000 km – 175,000 km in a lifetime. The equivalent of walking around the world three to five times. That’s a lot of leg work and a lot of time on your feet! So, as you can see, finding a good podiatrist to care for your feet is very important.
What Conditions Does a Podiatrist Treat?
Podiatrists are well-equipped with the skill, knowledge, and experience to treat a wide range of foot and leg conditions. This includes biomechanical complaints such as pain, injury, or walking concerns.
The most common conditions our podiatrists at Active Health Podiatry treat include:
· Ingrown toenails
· Callous
· Corns
· Fungal nail
· Plantar Fasciitis
· Achilles Tendinopathy/Tendinitis
· Heel pain
· Flat feet
· Bunions
In addition, we competently and diligently provide you with the best general foot care, attending to any skin or nail concern.
When Should I See a Podiatrist?
There is never a bad time to see a podiatrist!
If you’re experiencing foot or leg pain, we’re big believers in ‘the earlier, the better’. Consulting with your podiatrist at the first signs of discomfort minimises the risk of smaller problems becoming bigger problems. And, can reduce treatment and healing times.
What do I need to bring to my appointment?
Your podiatrist will conduct an initial assessment at your first consult. We recommend letting your podiatrist know about your medical and surgical history. It also helps to bring along a few things with you, such as a list of your current medications and most frequently worn shoes. Your podiatrist can take a look at them and determine whether they may be contributing to your foot condition or leg concern. Padding or insoles may also need to be placed inside your footwear as part of your treatment plan.
