What is Shockwave Therapy
Extracorporeal shockwave therapy is a treatment option that you may have heard of, or stumbled across online.
But what is it?
Shockwave Therapy utilises a machine to deliver targeted sound waves into injured tissue. The soundwaves create changes within the tissue (ie bone, muscle, tendons, fascia) and activate pathways that can promote adaptation, tissue growth, repair, and healing.
It also effects nerve pathways which can be useful in affecting pain response to chronic injury.
What is it used for?
Shockwave therapy is utilised for many different musculoskeletal injuries and conditions, however most commonly Heel Pain and Plantar Fasciitis.
At Active Health Podiatry, we use shockwave therapy to assist with a number of different injuries including:
· Plantar Fasciitis
· Achilles Tendinopathy
· Shin Splints (Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome)
· Painful tight muscles and trigger points
· Tenosynovitis
· Other tendon injury
Shockwave is rarely used alone, and is usually incorporated into a wider management plan that also addresses strength and conditioning, offloading, activity load management and footwear assessment.
