Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails are very painful, and unfortunately many people put up with them for far too long!

In most cases they occur around the edges of the nails on your big toe. The skin around the nail can become swollen and red, and can become infected. I often have people tell me that they really notice the throbbing pain at night in bed or when they put their shoes on.

Common causes can include incorrect nail cutting technique, tightly fitting footwear, and toenail shape or deformity.

Good news though! Ingrown toenails are easily managed, and our Podiatrists at Active Health Podiatry can offer you a variety of options.

Firstly, they need to be assessed. The problem can range in severity and this will influence how we treat them.

In some cases we can gently remove the nail spike on the first appointment. It is relatively painless, takes 1-2 minutes and you will find immediate relief. Walking out of the appointment pain free is a great feeling!

If the concern is more severe, for example if the area is very swollen or the nail itself is curling at the edge, we may discuss a more permanent solution to your concern. At Active Health Podiatry our Podiatrists are qualified to administer local anaesthetic to the area, and remove the offending piece of nail without you feeling a thing. This procedure is called a partial nail avulsion and is the best technique for solving your problem for good.

If ingrown toenails are affecting your life, make an appointment to discuss all of this with one of our experienced Podiatrists. We can discuss your options and put your mind, and toe at ease!
